Giving back to the community we call home.
Popoyo is more than a place we surf, practice yoga and welcome guests from around the world. It’s our home, and being part of this community means looking after it.
That’s why Surf & Yoga Retreat Nicaragua proudly supports Popoyo Paws, a grassroots animal welfare initiative working to improve the lives of dogs and cats in Popoyo and the surrounding community.
Why Popoyo Paws matters
Many families in and around Popoyo love and care deeply for their animals, but access to affordable veterinary care can be limited in this rural part of Nicaragua.
Popoyo Paws focuses on one of the most important ways to create long-term change: accessible spay and neuter programs.
By helping local families sterilize their dogs and cats, the project helps reduce animal suffering and improve the long-term health of the animals in the community.
But it’s about more than sterilization.
Popoyo Paws also helps with veterinary emergencies, abandoned animals, vaccinations, parasite treatments and special medical cases, while educating the community about responsible animal care.
Supporting monthly sterilization clinics
Together with Artemisa Hospital, Popoyo Paws organizes regular community sterilization clinics for local dogs and cats.
Veterinarians from Happy Pets in Rivas travel to the area to carry out the procedures, making professional veterinary care more accessible to families who might otherwise struggle to afford it.
The goal is to help spay, neuter and vaccinate around 40 animals each month.
To make this possible on a consistent basis, Popoyo Paws aims to raise around $2,000 each month to cover the costs of the clinics and associated veterinary care.
